Winter Season Anime 2021 Reviews

Hi everyone. As we are nearing the Spring Season 2021, it has been another round of week long packed simulcast schedules for 3 months. Without further delay, let’s get down to the review which will be updated as the last episode for each simulcast airs(subjected to my availability). Also, I will try to release my list for Spring 2021 Season simulcast selections as soon as possible (currently tied up with my day job. so kind of busy lately).

How will this brief review work? I will rate both the Japanese Dub and English Dub(If any) on a scale of 1 to 10. Afterwards, I will provide a brief review and few comments regarding the shows based on the rating given.

given The Movie

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: /10
Overall Review/Comments: After coming in from the 1st season of given, I can say this is good movie. The character development throughout the movie was good and mainly focuses on Haruki and Akihiko’s relationship journey which somewhat started back in the 1st season. However, I do feel like it could use a bit more drama/flare to further highlight the entangled relationship but they did managed to portray the true intention towards the end. Of course, the one thing that stands out with given series is Mafuyu’s singing which makes up for most of the shortfall in this movie. Overall, its a good movie if you are into boy bands and BL anime.

Skate-Leading Stars

Japanese Dub: 7/10
English Dub: 7/10
Overall Review/Comments: After coming in from Yuri on Ice, the first thing that came to mind was how different it was from regular figure ice-skating that we normally see in tournaments such as single and double figure ice-skating. This show introduces a new concept to figure ice-skating that I have never witnessed before in any official tournament. Although it didn’t feature the usual soundtracks we normally hear during regular figure ice-skating, the show does manage to draw out the potential in this new form of figure ice-skating. Overall, it is a good show if you are looking to expand your horizon in figure ice-skating.

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World Season 2

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Overall Review/Comments: After experiencing the 1st season for Re:Zero I was be annoyed at the main character as well as repeated deaths and coming back to life. It feels like the story was barely progressing as he keeps making mistakes which ended up with his death. Thankfully for the 2nd Season we do see a significant improvement in the main character as well as character development for other characters which is quite a refresher for a lot of fans. Overall, a good show if you want a show that closely focuses on character development.

2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: NA/10
Overall Review/Comments: A lot of people when they see this show and their first impression would be “Is this a Haikyuu knockoff?” since it was simulcasted right after the final season for Haikyuu. One thing I would like to make it clear, this is no Haikyuu as this show takes a slightly different approach which focuses on character development and friendships rather than the love for the sport. In other words, we see a lot of events taking place outside of the court rather than in tournaments with the exception of the last few episodes. Overall, it is a good show for those who want to explore volleyball sport anime but don’t want to sit through 4 seasons just to get to Nationals.

The Promised Neverland Season 2

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Overall Review/Comments: After coming in from Season 1 and putting aside the people’s comparison to the manga, this season feels like it was rushed for completion however it does ensure that the overall storyline does make sense. However the show could use more character development to ensure the audience can actually bond with the characters. A really good show if you are interested with dark and mysterious anime.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Overall Review/Comments: Another excellent work from MAPPA which has won the Crunchyroll Awards for Best Anime 2020. The elements that stands out the most is definitely the fighting scene. MAPPA’s expertise with motion capture really shines in this anime. Storyline wise was just right where character development is balanced. Overall a good show for those who like to watch show that is like Naruto, Black Clover and etc but do not want to sit through a ridiculous amount of episodes.

WAVE!! -LET’S GO SURFING!!

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: NA/10
Overall Review/Comments: This show definitely feels like most sport anime where the main character who wasn’t into the sport suddenly taking a liking for it after some event or encountering someone who is into the sport. This show definitely brings out the beauty of the sport however it does lack character development/story development. A lot of gaps in the story which will leave audience puzzled. Overall, it is a good show if you are into water sports anime.

Black Clover

Japanese Dub: 9/10
English Dub: 8/10
Overall Review/Comments: My first longest running simulcast has finally ended. This is definitely one of my favourite anime of all time. The storyline was easy to follow plus very deep character development alongside in-depth storyline where anyone can grasp the entire story. The ups and downs throughout the show really keeps the audience engaged with the show. Overall, a great show if you are into shounen anime if you are not into Naruto.

BUNGO STRAY DOGS WAN!

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Overall Review/Comments: This is also my first time reviewing this genre of anime. After watching all the episode of Bungo Stray Dogs along with the movie, this show definitely adds a nice touch to the existing series with the funny scenes. Definitely would like to se more of this spinoff genre for more shows. Overall, it is a good show if you like this spinoff genre as well as to unwind.

Scar on the Praeter

Japanese Dub: 7/10
English Dub: NA/10
Overall Review/Comments: This show at first strikes to me as odd mainly due to the lack of context/introduction to the story. A lot of questions was piling up as the story progressed. However the show does lack character development and story development which results in show being dull until the very end. Overall, this show I can only recommend this show to a certain audience as I feel like this show is adapted from somewhere but the studio did not do a good job.

Horimiya

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Overall Review/Comments: This show is one of my favourite shows for this season. With solid character development as well as story progression, it really brings out the potential of the show. With a lot of funny and awkward scenes will keep the audience engaged to the show. Overall, I would recommend this show for everyone as it portrays a lot important life aspects that we can learn from.

SK8 the Infinity

Japanese Dub: 9/10
English Dub: 8/10
Overall Review/Comments: This show is my favourite sport anime for the Winter Season 2021. The character development and story development reminds a lot of the Free! anime. The bonds between Langa and Reki definitely stands out through the out similar to Haru and Rin. The way the story is laid out definitely brings out the potential for the show as well as the love for the sport. Definitely a must watch if you are into extreme sports as well as the Free! Anime series.

And that will wrap up our Winter Season Anime 2021 reviews. More excitement awaits us in the Spring Season Anime 2021. Until next time, stay safe and healthy…………….
