Winter Season Anime 2023 Reviews

Hi everyone. Another season is almost coming to a close and with it a lot of great simulcasts that we took a look at during that time. Also, I will try to release my list for Spring 2023 Season simulcast selections as soon as possible.

What are the changes made to the review process? I will rate both the Japanese Dub and English Dub(If any) on a scale of 1 to 10 as usual. Afterwards, I will provide brief comments(If any) regarding the shows based on the rating given. The simulcasts are arranged based on their final episode simulcast date.

To Your Eternity Season 2:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Comments(If any): How do I put this? It has been another rollercoaster ride for the 2nd season. The character development was pretty solid where we are introduced to more people that Fushi met along the way. In terms of story, it was well laid out with in-depth story telling of his journey that you almost forget what was Fushi’s original goal from the beginning. The ups and downs in the story really brings out the value in the show. A great show if you are into long and winding adventurous kind of show. Can’t wait to see more of Fushi’s journey in the next season which seems to take place in our time given that he is drinking.

The Fire Hunter:

Japanese Dub: 7/10
English Dub: N/A
Comments(If any): Not sure where to start for this show. At first, it looks pretty straight forward but as we go further, it starts to get a bit cryptic and mysterious as we meet with more characters and learn their role in the society they live in. Honestly I’m a bit confused about some of the events that happened during the series as it wasn’t properly explained as they just skimmed over it. Overall, its a decent show with a good plot and average character development. Can’t wait to see what else they bring to the table for next season.

THE ICE GUY AND HIS COOL FEMALE COLLEAGUE:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Comments(If any): This show is your typical romance comedy but with very interesting characters and elements some of them posses. The character development was good as we get to see most of the characters grow and their relationship continue to deepen as time goes on. The story was well paced reflecting a lot of our lives in the office and outside of work. Overall a good show if you are into romantic comedy shows.

KAINA OF THE GREAT SNOW SEA:

Japanese Dub: 7/10
English Dub: N/A
Comments(If any): Another show where I’m a bit confused a first on where to begin but as the story goes on we slowly learn the truth behind everyone’s struggle to ensure humanity’s survival. The plot is a bit lacking where it mainly focuses on rescuing the princess and saving Atland from enemy attacks therefore it somewhat deviates from the objective which is to find this special “tree” in order to ensure their survival. Let’s what they will bring to the table in the following season.

Revenger:

Japanese Dub: 7/10
English Dub: 7/10
Comments(If any): This show is even more confusing as it starts off with a samurai who has given up on life after making the wrong call which ended up getting his fianc√©’s father murdered. The plot was good but a bit confusing as I’m constantly lost regarding the MC’s objective and the revenger group’s objective to get rid of the opium which seem to intertwine every now and then. Overall, its a good show if you are into samurai elements with past setting.

The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World:

Japanese Dub: 7/10
English Dub: 7/10
Comments(If any): This show is pretty much like most other fantasy anime where we have an OP character who tries to live a normal life surrounded by people they care about whilst tackling the enemy at large. Not much to say as the story and plot are very predictable with the key the difference is the kind of power our main character wields. Overall a good show if you are into those kinds of fantasy anime.

My Hero Academia Season 6:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Comments(If any): Another awesome season for this series where we see Deku continue to grow as a Hero along with his friend. Although he did hit a stumbling block during his journey which was pretty heart-breaking. Overall, quite excellent story, plot and character development as we feel everyone is continuously growing as they face more and more challenges. Can’t wait to see what else comes out way in the next season.

Trigun Stampede:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Comments(If any): This show was really unexpected first and foremost. The way the story and plot is executed really brings out the potential for this show that really got me hooked into the series. The character development was spot on as we learn so much about our characters as the story progresses. Overall, this is an excellent show for those who want some random sci-fi adventure with a hint of action.

Blue Lock:

Japanese Dub: 9/10
English Dub: 8/10
Comments(If any): This show was amazing as the details from the manga was adapted to the anime very well although there are some parts where the placement is a bit odd. This series truly brings out the potential of sport anime adaption from manga in general. The character development was excellent where get to see all of them struggle and grow as they battle their way through the selections in Blue Lock. Hopefully they will keep this momentum for their upcoming movie as well as 2nd season.

Yowamushi Pedal: Limit Break:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: N/A
Comments(If any): This show really brings out the excitement and joy in road racing. The story and plot was well executed although the outcome of this season was similar to previous season which is kind of strange. The character development was excellent as we saw the everyone continue to grow as the series progressed as well as the challenges faced along the way. Truly an excellent show if you are looking for a show that gives you an uplifting effect.

By the Grace of the Gods Season 2:

Japanese Dub: 7/10
English Dub: 7/10
Comments(If any): Another great season where we get to see Ryoma continue to grow and contribute to society in this new world he is living in. The story pacing and character development was spot on as we get to see Ryoma continue to improve himself by helping others out as well as spending time expanding his own business in a new town that he can call home despite the challenges faced along the way. Overall another great uplifting series if you are into Isekai that lifts your spirits.

High Card:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: N/A
Comments(If any): This show is a bit unique where the main element is those solitaire looking playing cards and the powers associated with them. The story and plot was really thought out well with all the ups and downs faced by the main character as they gather the cards from other “players” on the orders from the “king”. The character development was really good as we saw the characters grow as they carry out their individual missions without question. Overall its a great show if you are into fast paced adventure with a hint of chance/luck. Can’t wait to see what they will bring in the next season.

Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: N/A
Comments(If any): At first glance, I though this show was a rip off from Jujutsu Kaisen however when I continued further in which I realise this was its own show with its own unique story and plot. The story and plot was really good where we they started unveiling bit by bit the true reason behind Ryoma’s presence in the Nagatsuki’s household. The character development was also very good where we have a very good picture of both main characters and the supporting characters in the series. Overall its a excellent show if you are looking for another show which is similar in genre as Jujutsu Kaisen with added element of romance.

Play It Cool, Guys:

Japanese Dub: 9/10
English Dub: N/A
Comments(If any): For a show that is only 10 minutes long per episode, it packs a lot of funny moments as we go through the daily lives of Souma, Shun, Hayate, Takayuki and Motoharu. The story and plot was among the best I have seen so far for this genre of show. The character development was beyond expectation where we learned in-depth about the characters while at same time witness their clumsiness and quirkiness. A lot of their quirkiness I can relate to myself which really makes this show feel close at heart. Overall its an excellent show if you are looking for show that can bring out laughter in yourself while at the same helps you unwind at the end of the day. Hopefully they will be a continuation for this series at some point in the future.

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Comments(If any): It shouldn’t come as a surprise that this series has nailed it again in their latest season. The story and plot was very well laid out with good explanation and context for the events that we will befall the Armed Detective Agency. The character development also covers the characters that weren’t given spotlight in previous seasons like Tachihara which makes the series feel complete. Overall an excellent show if you are into lots of action with unpredictable plots. The story is not finished yet therefore we cannot wait what they will bring in the next season scheduled for this July.

Tsurune Season 2: The Linking Shot:

Japanese Dub: 9/10
English Dub: /10
Comments(If any): Another awesome season for this series with new characters and new challenges as they are up against another school which has a unique Kyudo form. The story and plot was excellent with good pacing as they face challenges in their efforts to improve themselves. The character development was beyond expectation we get to see both existing characters and new characters continue to grow as each of them is faced with a challenge that they must overcome in order to become excellent archers. Overall an excellent show if you are into sports anime that has a lot of good values to learn from. Hopefully there is more to come if a next season is planned.

Technoroid OVERMIND:

Japanese Dub: 9/10
English Dub: N/A
Comments(If any): This show at first may seem like your typical idol anime. However as we journey through the series, we learned that its a lot more than that as it touches on AI ethics among other things which really makes this show stand out from the others. The story and plot was very well written where I wasn’t expecting that turn of events when the main characters attempts to uncover his past. The character development was also excellent whereby we get to see them grow and evolve as they face their own challenges along the way especially towards the end. Overall an excellent show if you are into idol anime but want a bit of science fiction elements mixed in as well. Hopefully there will a continuation/spin-off for this series in the near future.

Buddy Daddies:

Japanese Dub: 8/10
English Dub: 8/10
Comments(If any): This show may seem like Spy X Family from a distance for most people. However as we go through the series, we learned that is very different from Spy X Family as it involves two assassins for hire and young girl called Miri who’s lives crossed during that one fateful mission. The story and plot was very well laid out as they we witnessed all ups and downs of them raising Miri whilst trying to keep their job a secret from her. The character development was also very good as we see our main characters Rei and Kazuki’s attitude changed as they were raising Miri despite the risk and challenges they face along the way. Overall another great family oriented show if you just need a straight forward and comedy feeling show to watch. Hopefully there will be a spin-off or new season at some point in the future.

UniteUp!:

Japanese Dub: 9/10
English Dub: N/A
Comments(If any): This idol anime was kind of unique as we get to see the talent production form and grow from the beginning while learning the backstory for most of its members which is normally not covered in many other idol anime. The story was very well laid out with excellent character development with their unique songs to match at the end of each episode. Truly one of the most breath taking idol anime I have ever watched. An excellent show if you are into idol anime and want a fresh take on the genre. Hopefully we do get a 2nd season or live concert performance later on.
