2016 has been an amazing year with many new things being announced and launched. However, not everyone is having a good year especially Samsung with their Note 7 debacle which is quite sad as the phone had the potential to be the best phone of 2016. Here are some of the highlights of 2016:
Launch of Pokémon GO
This was probably one of the smart moves for Nintendo as the game caught on really fast with high profits for Nintendo, The Pokémon Company International and Niantic. The game was the first Nintendo mobile game although the stakes were mostly held by Niantic and The Pokémon Company International. The game did run into some legal issues and incidents, but mostly were due to the lack of common sense by the players. The game also won the best mobile game of 2016 at The Game Awards.
Annoucement of the Nintendo Switch
Many rumours and leaks were circulating on the internet regarding the Nintendo’s next generation console codenamed the NX. However, Nintendo finally gives a short video showing the Nintendo Switch which confirms many of the rumours. The Nintendo Switch also made its first public appearance on TV show The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon as he got a chance to play the new Zelda game alongside the demonstration of Nintendo’s next mobile game Super Mario Run.
Launch of Pokémon Sun and Moon
Pokémon Sun and Moon really caught people’s attention as it was a new generation of Pokémon after the remake of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire with Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. According the sale statistics, the game was the best selling Pokémon game globally when compared to previous titles. The game introduced new features which allowed new players to jump on to the new game. In Malaysia, they had a several launch events for the game which caught media attention. Overall, the bold changes proved postive for the game.
Launch of Final Fantasy XV
After 2 years of development, Final Fantasy XV was released for the Xbox One and the PS4. Also, during annoucements this year they announced many other side releases such as the Kingslave movie, a mobile game and a spinoff title for the PS4 and Xbox One prior to the release of the game in November. Until now, the game is still considered the best game of the year even though it wasn’t nominated in The Game Awards due to the release date.
Overall, 2016 has been a wonderful year for games with so many releases which has been overwhelming for me to cover. However, more games are coming next year especially The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which is scheduled to be released in March of 2017 for the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch. Also, Nintendo will officially announce the Nintendo Switch on January 12th which will include launch dates as well as launch titles which I wil be convering. For those who are wondering, I did pre-order the Nintendo Switch alongside with the game so I will be doing a playthrough of both the Wii U version and the Switch’s version of the game.
